2/19/2023 0 Comments Driver versus iron golf swing![]() ![]() Done correctly, hitting the point under the golf ball results in generating a divot of grass or a blast of sand from a bunker. One of the biggest mistakes I see golfers make with their driver is that they hit down on the ball like an iron. The average golf driver has between 9-12 degrees of loft and because of this, we use a golf tee to help us get the ball airborne. ![]() ![]() In addition to the small clubface, driving irons require a golf swing much similar to that of a 4 iron or 5 iron which. Your driver is a much longer club than your irons and has much less loft. Consistency Many golfers struggle with finding consistency in a driving iron. You generate power with the shorter shaft of an iron by shifting your body weight from the back foot to the front foot and rotating your body toward the target at the moment of contact. Small clubface Driving irons do have a smaller clubface which makes them intimidating to use for some golfers. When you start your backswing with an iron, your focus is on a point that’s under the golf ball. The longest club in the bag, the driver, should be played just inside the front foot or opposite the left big toe (again for the right-handed golfer). But it is weight transfer and your body rotation that differentiates an iron swing from a driver swing. Typically, you set up so the ball is forward in the slot for longer shots and farther back for shorter shots. ![]() When you address the ball, the position of your front foot (closest to the target) in relation to the ball dictates the point in your downswing where you make contact. The length difference is significant because you now have a longer swing and greater. Comparatively, the standard 5-iron is slightly just above 38 inches. Conventionally, a standard driver is typically 45 inches in length, though some manufacturers may make them a little longer. The golf ball lies on the outer line of the box, and the distance between your feet defines the sides of the box. Your driver is the longest club in your bag. The slot is an imaginary box that you look into as you address and hit the golf ball. ![]()
